Definition of Terminals

Terminals : Multiuser Operating system में कई user एक ही कंप्यूटर पर काम करता है। वे terminal की सहायता से कंप्यूटर से जुड़े होते हैं। अतः एक कंप्यूटर से कई terminal जुड़े होते हैं।

TYPES OF TERMINALS 

Terminal तीन प्रकार के होते हैं - 

1.  Dumb terminal
2.  Smart terminal
3. Intelligent terminal

Dumb terminals

Dumb terminal, Keyboard व monitor का combination होता है। User Keyboard के द्वारा जो भी information देता है वह तुरंत कंप्यूटर तक पहुँच जाता है। यदि कोई भी character delete करना हो तो हमें उस character के पूरे सारे character को delete करने होते हैं। अतः इस प्रकार के terminal पर काम करना बहुत कठिन होता है।

Smart Terminals 

इस प्रकार के terminal पर keyboard व monitor के अलावा memory व microprocessor भी होता है इससे कुछ editing work भी किए जा सकते हैं। इसलिए keyboard से प्रत्येक character कंप्यूटर तक न जाकर block में information या पूरा information transfer होता है। यदि कोई  error प्राप्त हो तब text के कुछ भाग को delete किया जा सकता है लेकिन terminal का micro-processor user के program execute नहीं कर सकते।

Intelligent Terminals

इस प्रकार के terminal में एक microprocessor, एक small memory व एक secondary memory होती है। इसी terminal पर user द्वारा information दिया जाता है। यदि editing का काम होता है तो main कंप्यूटर पर information जाती है जहाँ Operating system होता है। इस प्रकार का terminal user के program में execute कर सकते हैं। Large व कंप्यूटर program बड़े system पर भेजे जाते हैं। इस प्रकार का terminal दूसरे terminal से भी communicate कर सकता है।
